In 2009, hundreds of stray dogs and puppies were dumped into a mangrove island, Pulau Selat Kering by the residents of Pulau Ketam in Malaysia. The dogs and puppies were left to die in hunger, thirst , illnesses and being drowned when the animals tried to swim back to Pulau Ketam. There was a similar animal cruelty practiced by the people in Ethiopia in 2007 where stray dogs were dumped into a deep cave. This adorable and cute video was taken at Vancouver Zoo of Nyac holding hands with another otter.
Unfortunately, Nyac died after as diagnosed with chronic lymphocyte leukemia a few days before her death. She was one of the last surviving sea otters from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Nyac came to the Vancouver Aquarium in 1989 as one of the few young survivors of the oil spill. She not only survived the traumatic event, but she overcame incredible odds and became the only known survivor to have successfully had a pup. So even in death, Nyac will continue to provide vital information on the long-term effects of oil exposure.
